Kayayo
The Kayayo are a class of thousands of women and girls from barren northern Ghana who travel south in search of work as porters in city markets. In November 2009, photographer Peter DiCampo, filmmaker Alicia Sully, and Peace Corps Volunteer Leader Allison Terry led a multimedia outreach program throughout Ghana’s Northern Region. Using photography and film, they engaged people in 20 villages in a discussion on Kayayo and urban migration, topics that are normally taboo. They also traveled with nurses who tested more than 400 people for HIV.
