Bill Gates on the soccer team's new partnership with the Gates Foundation in the fight to end polio

Contrary to popular belief, I don't spend a whole lot of time following soccer. But as I have travelled around the world to better understand global development and health, I've learned that soccer is truly universal. No matter where I go, that's what kids are playing. That's what people are talking about.

That's why I'm so excited to announce a partnership our foundation is creating with FC Barcelona, one of the greatest clubs in the world. We hope that together we can bring more global attention to the promise of life-saving vaccines and the fight to end polio.

In northern Nigeria, polio cases were actually on the rise because of mistrust of the polio vaccine itself. The citizens were under the impression that polio vaccines were an attempt to sterilize the islamic community in Nigeria because some of the patients who were administered the vaccine unfortunately ended up with polio.

Congratulations to the Gates Foundation on the new partnership. FC Barcelona is focused when it comes to pitching in disease prevention. FC Barcelona has already partnered with Text to Change(see http://www.texttochange.org)which implements a wide variety of projects including HIV/AIDS, Malaria and reproductive health in the quest to achieve MDG 6.

A very big thanks to Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations and FC Barcelona for this giant step taken to help in the eradication of polio throughout the world. Polio as an ill health is associated with a very big stigma. The stigma of polio stays with the person that suffered it all through his / her life time. The present situation of vaccination against polio has helped to reduce this stigma and polio related disablility that goes with it. I am a victim of polio, I am physically disabled at my right leg at the moment, I have lived with this disablility caused by polio for 38 years and will still live with it for many more years. The physical and psychological state of a child/ man with a disablility is demeaning and requires more of psyching, tuning up and counseling to be at par with others without physical disablility. Polio has caused a lot of damage to the socio-political, economic and religious life of the people and hence, eradication of polio is neccessary, mandatory and needs urgent step not only by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations and FC Barcelona to eradicate throughout the world. Other NGO’s should emulate this kind gestures of this two.
Once again, I wish to express my heart felt felicitations to the Bill and Melinda Foundations for their resolve in the fight against many diseases that kill faster than HIV/AIDS. There recent program to eradicate Malaria is a Welcome development. For championing the cause of GLOBAL Health, I say BRAVO to Bill and Melinda Gates. You did not misuse the gains from your software business. I will like to join in the crusade of the global health against all these diseases that has caused havoc to the mental and physical health of the people. I regret to say that I have never benefitted from any Government or NGO’S acclaimed fund for the disadvantaged in the society. Since my childhood to adulthood, nothing has ever come my way (free education, medicare etc). I resolve to be in the front to champion causes against health and safety in the society. I don’t wish for any person to pass through what I passed. With little regards to my semi education, I am happily married with two kids and have a small scale business. Cheers!!
